Baltimore Museum of Art // Relations and Marketing Internship

Summer Internship at the BMA

The first time I heard about this position was through a MICA email announcing that BMA was open for Summer intern applications. I had been actively looking for internship opportunities and had a strong interest in the BMA, so I immediately decided to apply.

About the BMA | Baltimore Museum of Art

I was responsible for drafting proposals for grants and sponsorship applications, communicating with colleagues in various departments, and gathering information to strengthen the proposals. One challenge I faced is how to effectively translate creative ideas from the programs I hear about into compelling proposals for potential funders and donors. I was also assigned the task of creating forms to track potential funders, which involved using specific software for data collection. Overall, the work is both challenging and rewarding, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity.

So far, I am most proud of my growth in writing, research, and communication skills. I have become more confident in both researching and writing effective proposals. My internship also requires frequent communication, and I’ve gained valuable experience in asking questions and clarifying issues. I’m grateful for the supportive and friendly environment at BMA. Although much of my work is done independently, I enjoy interacting with my colleagues on-site and appreciate the kindness they have shown me throughout my Internship.

Baltimore Museum of Art Seeks Chief of External Affairs

Overall, my internship has been incredibly valuable in building my confidence and expanding my understanding of the museum industry. The experience, particularly in researching and writing will be extremely beneficial to my future as an artist. I’ve come to realize that many exhibitions in museums are made possible by a team of people who may not be artists themselves but are equally passionate about art. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to witness and participate in the work they do, which has deepened my appreciation for the behind-the-scenes efforts that support art in museums.

Additionally, I’ve gained a lot from the conversations I’ve had with my supervisors and colleagues. It has been fascinating to hear their perspectives on current trends in the museum world and their concerns about the future of museums. These insights have broadened my view of the industry and the challenges it faces. I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent three months in this role, learning and contributing to the museum's work, and I hope to stay in touch with all of my colleagues moving forward.
