My name is
Isabella Pittman and I am a rising Junior Interactive arts major. This summer,
I interned at Holographic Studios in New York, NY. My work as an artist is all about
light and sound waves as invisible forces in our world. Holography is all about
light waves! During my spring semester last year, I saw many of my peers
applying for internships so I decided I should do the same. While in a deep
internship search I randomly found this internship at a Hologram Studio on a
site I do not remember the name of. I send a very passionate email to the owner
of the studio about how special I think holograms are and immediately got a
response asking me to come intern. I visited that spring to check it out and
really got along with the owner of the studio, Jason Sapan aka Dr. Lazer. It’s
an amazing feeling to meet someone who has so much experience in a medium you
have never explored but always cared about the concepts involved. I came to New
York last July for a shorter period of time and had a great experience so I decided
to come back for a longer period of time this summer and actually receive
credit.
This past July and
early August I feel I have really expanded both my knowledge of Holography and
electronics. My days were spent watching the studio, taking notes on different
processes related to holography, giving tours, and of course, making holograms.
I learned a lot more about the different types of holograms and their
scientific terms. Dr. Laser gave me some hologram film and chemicals so I can
make my own holograms back in Baltimore. I also learned the name of other
companies and holography studios around the world. Holography is not an
incredibly popular field which makes many people in the field happy to share
their knowledge. I hope to create my own work so I can share it with others in
the field. While there I also became comfortable with looking at schematics for
electronics which I know will serve me throughout my career.
I am proud of both
the work I have made and the relationships I have built this summer. I know I
will revisit Holographic Studios in the future. But for now there is so much more
for me to learn on my own.
