Bibhu Mohapatra // Fashion Internship

Image
Luxury Fashion Design and Production Intern My internship with Bibhu Mohapatra was a pivotal and eye-opening experience that marked the beginning of my journey in the fashion industry. I made it a daily habit to search "fashion design internship" on LinkedIn, and ensured my cover letter and resume were always ready to go. I sent out countless applications. Then, one day, I received an email from Bibhu Mohapatra. I traveled to NYC for the interview and it turned out to be an incredible experience, and I was thrilled to join his design team. Bibhu Mohapatra design focuses on upscale women's clothes, especially for Couture. They focus on weddings and various other designs in collaboration with the emerging designer. His works are praised for their sophisticated modern design, fine details, and fusion of traditional workmanship with modern aesthetics. I worked directly with the Production Manager and Creative Director, which provided me with an opportunity to collaborate clo...

Image
Imagine This Women's International Film Festival aims to empower women and non-binary filmmakers worldwide. They promote these great filmmakers so that more people can see women's power and provide them with educational and professional opportunities. I found this opportunity through LinkedIn. It's the first time I have tried social networking with unfamiliar people. For this internship, I did a virtual interview with my supervisor, and she told me I got the Graphic Designer position after one week. We had a total of 4 Graphic Design interns working together. We all work through a platform called Asana. Every week we have a virtual meeting for 30 mins. Sometimes it's 1 hour. We also share our progress on different projects so we can easily get suggestions from others. For this position, my major duties included: ● Opening Credits(Typography Animation) for the 7th Annual Imagine This Women's International Film Festival ● Sales for tickets Motion Graphics ● Design ...

Neighborhood Fiber Co.

Image
My name is Elena Echenique and I am a senior Fiber major. During the Fall of 2018, I was a Dye Assistant Intern for Neighborhood Fiber Co., a company based in Baltimore, Maryland. Before the beginning of the semester, I was on the hunt for an internship to gain experience and skills in the field of fiber arts. I was exploring the Career Development website in search for opportunities when I came across the internship opening at NFC. For some time now I have had a goal to someday own my own yarn business in which I harvest, spin, and dye my own yarn, so when I came across this opportunity, I figured it would teach me some very useful skills that would help me reach my goal. The company itself is a locally based business that purchases the winded and un-dyed yarn from a nearby manufacturer and then produces its own colors through a variety of dye recipes. The yarn is then hand-dyed and sold in a single location. For this internship, I was part of the hand-dying process as an assis...

The Working Assembly

Image
My name is Danny Varillas and I am a senior Graphic Design major. This summer had the  privilege of being a design intern at The Working Assembly in New York, NY. I first heard about  The Working Assembly during my junior year in flexible design studio. This course was  structured around workshops with various professional designers and studios around the  country, and The Working Assembly was one of those studios. A MICA alumni who is currently  working at The Working Assembly encouraged me to apply for the summer internship position. I  had been interested in their work and decided to give it a shot. I sent a brief email with my  resume and portfolio link. They quickly contacted to schedule an interview. Within a week I had  received a email of acceptance. The Working Assembly is multidisciplinary design studio that primarily focuses on branding. The  studio is primarily women employed and led. This is one of the things that sets it apar...

Planned Parenthood Federation of America

Image
I completed the Graphic Design Internship at Planned Parenthood Federation of America this summer in downtown Manhattan. I had been interested in this job for years, having known for a long time that I want to pursue design for social change - specifically to empower women and the LGBTQ+ communi ty. Planned Parenthood’s commitment to reproductive health and justice for all racial, gender, and sexual minorities is something I’m very proud to stand by, so it was my top choice in looking for social justice nonprofit work experience. My mother and grandmother have been volunteering for them for decades, which helped me feel like the organization and its mission are also a part of my roots. When a previous supervisor of mine from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) started designing for Planned Parenthood in 2015, I knew I had to apply. My portfolio wasn’t ready when I interviewed with him as a college freshman, but he gave me great feedback that I ...

I followed up and emailed Evan my cover letter, resume, and a curated portfolio of my video and photo work that matched Refinery’s aesthetic. He replied and asked for an interview.
