Arts Every Day // Curatorial Internship - Student 2

Curatorial Internship at a Non-profit Arts Organization

I had originally first gotten into contact with AED last school year through the EDS program. Through that class, I was able to meet the director of operations at AED. After the class I reached out to who would be my supervisor to participate with more hands-on experience through this internship.

Arts Every Day is a non profit organization dedicated to advancing equitable access to arts education in Baltimore City Public Schools. Some ways they achieve this is through art experience/materials funding, teacher professional development, and the 10x10 exhibition. This exhibition is the project I would be working on. This is an annual exhibition hosted by AED where Baltimore City students and teachers alike submit artwork to celebrate the creativity that is abundant within our community. This year's exhibition theme is “Culture: Symbols, Rituals and Heroes.”

“Arts Every Day is proud to present its 9th Annual 10X10 Exhibit titled: CULTURE: Symbols, Heroes & Rituals. Culture can be defined as a set of shared beliefs, values, and behaviors that define a group of people. This includes but is not limited to language, customs, and beliefs about relationships and roles. We encourage students to reflect on what aesthetics, traditions, and identifiers define their culture. Art Every Day’s 10×10 Exhibit connects young artists and rising arts leaders with collaborative exhibition opportunities, working alongside local curators and arts education advocates.

As a result of this internship I feel like there are many skills I have gained. Engaging in opportunities like curating art exhibitions offers numerous benefits that contribute to personal and academic growth. This includes but is not limited to: organization, project management, critical thinking, communication, fostering a deeper appreciation of visual culture, curation exposes people to diverse perspectives and broadens worldview, networking opportunities, connecting with other artists, community engagement and much more! A lot goes into planning a show than I originally thought.

Overall, this was a very rewarding experience as it is such a proud moment to see all the hard work I have done start to be finalized as we got closer to the exhibition date. For me, working with AED has clarified how important community engagement is. Careers in curation and exhibitions do not always have to follow the path of working for a higher institution. It is more fulfilling to be involved and work with places whose vision aligns with yours.
