NYLON

It had always been a dream of mine to work at NYLON so I researched who the members of the video team were. I found the contact information of the video producer and cold emailed her my resume and cover letter and a curated portfolio of my video and photo work that matched NYLON’s aesthetic. She asked me go in for the interview and after the interview, received the internship offer.

NYLON is a multi-platform media company that focuses on pop culture and fashion. Its coverage includes art, beauty, music, design, celebrities, technology and travel through articles and video content.

My direct supervisor was the video producer, Maura. Her primary responsibilities were managing the budget for each video, planning the content and creative concepts, scheduling video shoots, and getting in contact with talent.

My main responsibilities as a video intern were assisting with studio and on location productions in lighting, sound, and gear set up. I was in creative meetings where I pitched video concepts. I edited promotional video content for their social media platforms, researched information for upcoming videos, and assisted in analytics reports. For example, I helped on set with their Summer Solstice video where they interviewed spiritual guides. I pitched video concepts for their video on PVC bags.

I am most proud of the research I had done for their upcoming video series. NYLON is recreating their video strategy and will soon be producing high production value video series. I researched talent and collectives for them to reach out to cover. I felt that I had contributed my knowledge as a Generation Z audience to allow them to tap into the most notable people to interview.

My biggest take-away from my experience was seeing how a media company rebrands from print to digital. NYLON had recently shut down their print copies and was in the transitional process of becoming a solely online platform. I saw how the whole team worked together to strategize new ways to make the concept of NYLON work online.

The most important thing I learned is the importance of collaboration. The video team was comprised of videographers that also edited and produced. This dynamic can only work if you collaborate as a team at all times and communicate well with each other. Some new skills I have gained are how to produce short-form content. From creative treatment, to building presentation decks, to creating the shot list, and then filming and editing.

This has helped clarify my career goals in seeing the possibility of being a video producer, videographer, and editor as an all-in-one job since the video team videographers collaborated all three jobs together.
