Open Walls Baltimore

I am Killian Barnes. In the winter of 2011-2012 I found out my close friend Andrew Pisacanewas approached by a PNC investment banker to do a mural conferencein Baltimore. I approached Andrew if I could intern for him so I could be apart a great new thing in Baltimore. When the first artist, Over Under, made it to BWI, my job started. Throughout the course of next two months I helped orchestrate everything that wasn't actually painting the full murals. If a wall needed to be prepared. Andrew, David (another artist), and myself would prepare it. When the Portuguese Artist, Vils, needed a two story wall stuccoed for his piece, we were there to do it. Since I had a car, I was able to be the go to man for picking up and delivering paint/materials. The best part of the internship was making connections with the 20 plus artists from around the world. We brought them here, took care of them, and showed them a great time. If I am ever to travel to Italy, Argentina,Arizona, etc. I have a place to stay. A lot of art is meeting the right people, and thats what Open Walls Baltimore taught me.

My name is Natalie Hawkins, I am a senior at Maryland Institute of Art studying Graphic Design. This semester I had the privilege to intern at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. The Applied Physics Lab is a lab of over 6,000 people. According to their website they “Solve complex research, engineering, and analytical problems that present critical challenges to our nation.” When I applied to the Physics Lab I was not familiar with the company. I found the listing on the MICA network. Out of all of the internships I applied for, I was most qualified for this one. This internship, like any graphic design internship, required a healthy knowledge of the Adobe Suite. They were also looking for someone who was familiar with Blender which is a 3D modeling and animation program. I had taught myself how to use blender last year. Baltimore Tree Trust Internship

This semester, I got to work with Baltimore Tree Trust as their communication design intern. I was lucky enough to meet my supervisor, the senior communications director at Baltimore Tree Trust, at the fall semester Practice and Pie event hosted by Career Development. Immediately, I became obsessed with Baltimore Tree Trust and the work they do for the Baltimore community. Baltimore Tree Trust is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that is focused on providing trees, environmental education, and career pathways in forestry to the Baltimore community. The bulk of what they do revolves around their team of Neighborhood Forestry Technicians – an awesome team of people born and raised in Baltimore who go out into the community and plant trees in neighborhoods that need it most. Beyond just planting trees, Baltimore Tree Trust also provides educational resources on the importance of green spaces in urban environments and seeks to unite different Baltimore communities through city greening. ...

Internship at Night Owl Gallery

 I first found out about this opportunity through the Gallery’s instagram page. I was already following them because I had some artwork in one of their previous shows, and so I emailed them and said I was interested in the intern position that they had open. They asked for a resume and an interview, and I ended up getting the position. The owner of the gallery was my direct supervisor, who organized all of its events and coordinates with artists in order to hold shows at the gallery. I also did some work with another supervisor, who handled a lot of the gallery’s more technical work involving spreadsheets and advertising. On slower days, I worked the front desk at the gallery, and helped talk to other artists and potential customers, and helped to sell artwork. I also helped some with setting up their website and stock-keeping.
